Fear of Being Different

One of the reasons we fail to acknowledge our differences is that while we were growing up, being different meant being laughed at or rejected. To become popular or powerful, we needed to become like those who were already popular or powerful. As kids, we spent a lot of time trying to be like other kids.

Even though we’re adults now, and even if we were very fortunate in having parents who could truly support us in our uniqueness, we’re still up to think being different means risking rejection and failure. To various degrees, most people are insecure about appearing different. We are afraid that someone will come along and correct us or judge us as wrong, bad, or inadequate. Unfortunately, this is a valid fair. Insecure people are every where and quite automatically pounce on anyone who starts to step out and be themselves. For this reason, differences can be seen as a threat.
